(2019 Advanced English Conversation - English Debate)

According to a thesis named ‘The Effect of Child Birth Grants on the Fertility: Evidence from South Korea,’ which was written by Chang Woo Park, and Heon Jae Song in 2014, birth encouragement policies had no effect to the number of birth beyond the second birth order.

Hello, I’m Koo Jae-young, and I’m in the opposition side of the debate team.

Our team believes that giving pension to women who bear more kids isn’t useful since it has problems in the side of ethics and effectiveness.

I will give my refutations against the two pro arguments and then provide my arguments for the OPP team.

- TOP OF CASE ENDED

First, the proposition side said that giving pension to women who bear more children will help increasing birth rate, but this team thinks it’s not that effective. Just giving more pension is not the fundamental solution, and it’s not effective at all. First, according to statistics of national pension in Korea, 2017, which was done by Korean Statistical Information Service, the number of women who get pension from the government was 2 million less than the number of men who get pension. But the topic of our debate says that only the women can get the pension, and what if the women who bear many babies don’t have jobs or don’t get any pension? This institution has no use in those situations.

Also, proposition said that the more benefit is given, the more people will bear babies, but it has ethical problems as our team member said before. Is it ethically right to bear a person for money? We learn that people should not be treated as a method, but be treated as a person himself in social studies class, but this pension giving institution is completely the opposite side of what we usually learn in school.
